A scanned PDF looks fine on screen but you cannot search, copy a sentence, or convert cleanly to Word. That is because the pages are pictures of text, not text. Optical character recognition (OCR) adds an invisible text layer so the file becomes searchable while the original page images stay visible.
PdfPeaks Make PDF Searchable runs OCR in the browser workflow so you can find names, invoice numbers, or clauses with Ctrl+F — and feed better input into PDF to Word or Translate PDF.
When you need OCR
- Phone or flatbed scans of contracts, certificates, or textbooks
- Faxed or photocopied packets saved as PDF
- Image-only exports from some scanners (“PDF” that has no selectable text)
- Before translation or summarization of scanned documents
If you can already highlight words with the cursor, you may not need OCR — go straight to extract or convert.
Step 1 — Start from a readable scan
OCR quality follows image quality. Prefer even lighting, high contrast, and pages that are not skewed. Crop useless margins with Crop PDF if borders confuse recognition. Unlock password-protected scans with Unlock PDF first.
Step 2 — Run Make PDF Searchable
Open Make PDF Searchable, upload the scanned PDF, and start OCR. Wait for processing, then download the searchable copy.

Step 3 — Verify search works
Open the download in a PDF reader and search for a distinctive word from page one. Spot-check a number-heavy line (IDs, totals). OCR can misread damaged print; fix critical typos in Word after conversion if you need a perfect editable copy.

Step 4 — Next workflows
- Extract Text for a plain-text export
- PDF to Word for editing
- Translate PDF for Urdu, English, Arabic, and 130+ languages
- Compress PDF if the searchable file is large for email
Tips for better OCR accuracy
- Scan at a reasonable resolution — tiny, dark phone photos fail more often than clear A4 scans.
- One language per page helps; mixed scripts are harder.
- Avoid heavy stamps or highlighter glare over the words you care about.
- For ID cards as PDF (not OCR of the whole book), see scan ID front and back.
FAQ — Searchable PDF / OCR
Does OCR change how the page looks?
Usually you still see the original scan; OCR adds a text layer underneath for search and copy. Always open the file once to confirm.
Is Make PDF Searchable free?
PdfPeaks offers the tool in the browser for standard jobs without installing desktop OCR software. See the tool page for current limits.
Can I OCR then translate?
Yes. Searchable text is the right input for Translate PDF. Walkthrough: translate a PDF to Urdu or English.
Why is search still failing?
The page may be too blurry, or you may have downloaded the original by mistake. Re-run OCR on a clearer scan and test search again.
