Make PDF Searchable with OCR

Scanned PDFs and image-based documents look like text on screen, but without an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) text layer they cannot be searched, copied, or indexed by assistive technology. PdfPeaks adds a hidden text layer that mirrors the visible characters on each page, turning static scans into functional, searchable PDFs you can use in everyday workflows — no desktop software required.

How It Works

1. Upload your PDF

Select a scanned or image-based PDF. Clear, straight pages produce the best recognition results.

2. OCR processing

Our pipeline analyses each page, detects character shapes, and builds a searchable text layer aligned with the original layout.

3. Download searchable PDF

Open the output in any PDF reader, press Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F), and search, select, and copy text like a born-digital document.

FAQ

OCR converts pictures of text into machine-readable characters. Without it, a scanned PDF is only an image — you cannot search for words, copy paragraphs, or run accessibility tools. Adding OCR makes the document practical for research, compliance, and archiving.

No. Files are transferred over HTTPS, processed in temporary secure storage, and automatically deleted after your job completes. We do not sell user data or use your documents for advertising.

The visible appearance stays the same. OCR adds an invisible text layer underneath the scan so search and copy work without altering fonts or layout on the page.

Yes. Each page is processed individually and combined into one searchable PDF output file.

If a text layer already exists, the tool preserves it. OCR is most valuable for purely scanned or photographed documents.

No account is required for standard use. Upload, process, and download in one session.

Most documents finish in under a minute. Large files or low-resolution scans may take longer.

Yes. PdfPeaks OCR/searchable PDF tools are free to use with reasonable file-size limits.

Supported Document Types

Our searchable PDF / OCR workflow supports:

  • Scanned PDFs from office scanners, mobile camera apps, or multifunction printers
  • Image-only PDFs created from JPG, PNG, or TIFF sources
  • Forms and letters with typed or printed text (handwriting recognition may vary)
  • Multi-page archives such as book chapters, manuals, and invoice batches
  • Mixed documents where some pages are digital and others are scans (OCR targets image pages)

Accuracy Tips

Follow these guidelines for the highest OCR accuracy:

  • Scan at 300 DPI or higher — low resolution blurs character edges.
  • Keep pages flat and aligned; skewed photos reduce recognition quality.
  • Avoid heavy shadows, glare, and creases across text lines.
  • Use high contrast (dark text on light background) when possible.
  • For phone photos, fill the frame with the document and tap to focus before capture.
  • Remove staples or use flatbed scanning to prevent curved page distortion.
  • If output has errors, re-scan at higher quality or preprocess with Compress PDF only after OCR — never before.
