What is PDF/A? The Archival Format Explained

Why archives, government, and compliance teams require PDF/A — and how to create it online.

PDF/A is a specialized PDF subset built for long-term preservation. Archives, courts, and regulated industries often require it instead of a standard PDF.

Why PDF/A exists

Standard PDFs may rely on fonts, colors, or features that break decades later. PDF/A embeds fonts, restricts risky content, and self-documents for archival systems.

PDF/A-1, PDF/A-2, PDF/A-3

PDF/A-1 is the strict baseline. PDF/A-2 adds JPEG2000 and transparency. PDF/A-3 allows embedded files (XML, CSV) for structured records.

Create PDF/A online

Upload a clean source PDF to PDF to PDF/A. Fix corrupt inputs with Repair PDF first if viewers already show errors.

Compliance workflow

After conversion, password-protect confidential archives or redact PII before public release. For pipeline context see our PDF processing architecture guide.

Convert to archival format with PDF to PDF/A.
