PDF/A is a specialized PDF subset built for long-term preservation. Archives, courts, and regulated industries often require it instead of a standard PDF.
Why PDF/A exists
Standard PDFs may rely on fonts, colors, or features that break decades later. PDF/A embeds fonts, restricts risky content, and self-documents for archival systems.
PDF/A-1, PDF/A-2, PDF/A-3
PDF/A-1 is the strict baseline. PDF/A-2 adds JPEG2000 and transparency. PDF/A-3 allows embedded files (XML, CSV) for structured records.
