Flip Image

1. Upload your image. Drag it onto the upload area or pick it from your device. JPG, PNG and WebP files work.
2. Choose a direction. Horizontal mirrors left to right. Vertical mirrors top to bottom. Select both if you need both.
3. Check the preview. Look at faces, logos, arrows and any text before you go on. Backwards text is the most common surprise.
4. Apply the flip.
5. Download the result. Keep the original file too, in case you want to start over.

SELFIES

Front cameras usually show you mirrored in the preview but save the photo the other way round, so the saved version can look slightly off. A horizontal flip gives you back the version you saw on screen. Many phones have a setting for this too. On iPhone it's called Mirror Front Camera, in the Camera settings.

IRON-ON AND TRANSFER PRINTING

Heat transfer vinyl and most iron-on transfer paper instructions tell you to mirror the design first, so text reads correctly once it's pressed onto the fabric. Flip the image horizontally, then follow the instructions for your material. Some methods print normally and don't want a mirror, so check before you print.

SCANS AND PHOTOS OF DOCUMENTS

Occasionally a scanner or camera app saves a page in reverse. A horizontal flip puts the text back the right way. If the page is merely sideways or upside down, rotate it instead.

LAYOUTS AND DESIGN

Designers often flip a portrait so the subject looks toward the text or into the middle of the page. The same trick works for arrows, icons and illustrations that need to point the other way. If you build layouts in Urdu or Arabic, directional graphics such as arrows and decorative elements sometimes need mirroring for right-to-left reading. Leave logos, photos of signs and anything with text alone.

SYMMETRY AND REFLECTIONS

Flip one copy of a photo, then place both side by side in your editor for a symmetrical design. A vertical flip placed below the original gives a simple water-reflection look.

WHEN NOT TO FLIP

Don't flip identity documents, certificates, forms, maps, road signs or anything where the text must read correctly. For official uploads, use the orientation the recipient asked for. Be careful with logos too, because a mirrored logo can break brand rules.

Start from the original file, not a screenshot or a re-saved copy.

Check whether the image is already mirrored before you flip it. A second flip would undo the first.

If text is sideways rather than backwards, rotate the image instead of flipping it.

WHY DOES MY PHOTO LOOK FLIPPED OR SIDEWAYS?

There are three usual causes. The first is the selfie mirroring described above. The second is the orientation tag that phones store inside every photo. Some apps and websites ignore it, so a photo that looks fine on your phone appears sideways or upside down after upload. That is a rotation problem, and flipping won't fix it. The third is a scanner app that saves captures in reverse. If the picture is mirrored, flip it. If it is turned, rotate it.

DOES FLIPPING CHANGE SIZE OR QUALITY?

The dimensions stay the same. A flip only moves pixels to new positions, so nothing is lost in the flip itself. The only possible loss happens when a file is saved. A JPG is compressed again on export, a PNG isn't. Keep your original, and avoid re-saving the same JPG over and over.
