Ask five different Pakistani companies for a sample experience letter and you'll get five different documents — one is a paragraph, one has a company stamp the size of a rupee coin, and one is missing the exact line an embassy or new employer actually wanted to see. Same story with NOCs, except worse, because half the ones floating around online are just experience letters with the title changed.

Experience Letter, NOC, and Relieving Letter Are Not the Same Document
People use these interchangeably in conversation, which is exactly how the wrong one ends up in an application packet.
Experience letter (a.k.a. experience certificate): issued by an employer to confirm someone worked there — role, dates, and usually a line on conduct. It's a certification. It looks backward at employment that already happened.
NOC (No Objection Certificate): permission language, not certification. An NOC says the company has no objection to something specific — you resigning early, you traveling abroad, you pursuing a second job or further studies while still technically bonded to them. It looks forward at something you're about to do.
Relieving letter: confirms you've formally exited — cleared dues, returned company property, handed over duties — usually issued on or right after your last working day. Not every Pakistani employer bothers issuing this separately; a lot fold it into the experience letter.
If your new employer's HR is asking for "proof you actually worked there," they want an experience letter. If a bank, embassy, or your own employer's exit process is asking whether anyone objects to what you're about to do, that's an NOC. Sending the wrong one is a common reason people get bounced back to HR a second time.
When You'll Actually Need One of These in Pakistan
Leaving during a service bond. Banks, telecom companies, and engineering firms in Pakistan commonly attach a one- to two-year bond to training programs or certain roles. Leaving early usually needs a written NOC from the employer, sometimes with bond-completion or waiver terms spelled out — otherwise the new employer's HR gets nervous about hiring someone who technically still owes their old company.
Switching jobs normally. New HR departments routinely ask for an experience letter from your last one or two employers before finalizing an offer, mainly to confirm your CV isn't fiction.
Visa applications. Several visa categories — Gulf work visas in particular, and some study visas — ask for an employer letter confirming current employment and no objection to travel or resignation. Embassies tend to want this on letterhead, signed, sometimes stamped.
Studying further, at home or abroad. Some HEC-linked programs, executive degrees, and scholarships ask for proof of prior work experience before they'll credit it toward admission or a stipend.
Bank loans, credit cards, account opening. Banks often want a simple employment verification letter — close cousin of the experience letter, sometimes accepted alongside a salary slip.
Remote or freelance work for a Pakistani employer. If you're proving income or employment history for a visa or a foreign landlord, an experience letter carries more weight than a screenshot of a bank transfer.
What a Valid Experience Letter Actually Needs
The letters that get rejected are almost always missing one of these, not all of them:
- Company letterhead — name, address, and contact details at the top. Plain paper reads as unofficial even when the content is accurate.
- Employee's full name, designation, and department.
- Exact joining date and last working date. "Around 2022" doesn't hold up.
- A line or two on the actual role and responsibilities — not mandatory everywhere, but it's what turns a form letter into something a new employer trusts.
- A conduct remark: satisfactory, good, or excellent. This is the one line most reviewers scan for first.
- Signature, printed name, and designation of whoever signed it. An unlabeled scribble doesn't count as authorization.
- Company stamp, if the company uses one — plenty of mid-size Pakistani firms still expect it, even for a digital PDF.
What a Valid NOC Actually Needs
Different structure, because it's granting permission rather than certifying history:
- A clear statement of what the company isn't objecting to — resignation, travel dates, a second job, further studies. Vague NOCs ("no objection to Mr. X's plans") get sent back for clarification.
- If it's tied to a bond, ideally a line referencing the bond terms or confirming it's been waived — this is what protects the employee later if the old employer disputes anything.
- The same signature, designation, and letterhead requirements as the experience letter above.
Why These Letters Get Bounced Back
- Vague or missing dates.
- Printed on plain paper with no letterhead.
- Signed, but no name or designation next to the signature.
- Built from a copy-pasted Word template — with the previous company's name still sitting in a field somewhere. It happens more often than HR departments would like to admit.
- An NOC that never actually uses the words "no objection" anywhere in the body. It's just an experience letter with a different heading, and reviewers notice.
How to Generate One Free with PdfPeaks
- Open the Experience Letter / NOC generator.
- Fill in company details, employee details, and the exact joining and last-working dates.
- Choose a conduct remark, or write your own line if the preset options don't fit.
- Download the PDF. If you need a signature on it, run it through Sign PDF or build one first with the Signature Maker.
No signup, no watermark, and nothing is stored after the file is generated.
If you're using the letter to apply for a new role, it's worth updating your CV and pairing it with a cover letter at the same time — most HR departments want all three together anyway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my employer legally required to give me an experience letter in Pakistan?
Companies registered under Pakistan's industrial and commercial employment rules are generally expected to issue proof of employment on request, and most professional employers do this as standard practice. Requirements can vary by sector and company size, so this isn't a substitute for checking your own employment contract or getting legal advice for a specific dispute.
My company won't issue one because of my bond — what can I do?
Put the request in writing (email is fine) so there's a record, and check your original bond agreement for the exact waiver or buyout terms. If HR is stalling rather than refusing outright, a written request with a deadline tends to move things faster than a verbal one.
Can I still get a usable letter if my old company shut down or HR is unresponsive?
Sometimes. A last payslip, an old salary slip, or an appointment letter can work as backup proof for some purposes, though it's not a full substitute for an experience letter where one is specifically required.
Does an embassy or bank accept a PDF, or do they want an original hard copy?
It depends on the specific embassy or bank and what the letter is for — some accept a signed PDF, others want an original with a wet-ink signature and stamp. Check the exact requirement for your case before submitting.
What's the actual difference between an NOC and a relieving letter?
An NOC is granted before or during the process of leaving — it's permission to do something. A relieving letter is issued after you've left — it confirms you're fully cleared. They can overlap in timing but they're answering different questions.
